Slicers

In Power BI, the Slicer is the bridge between a static report and a truly interactive data story.


1. Slicer Orientations and Styles

Depending on the type of data you drag into a Slicer, Power BI offers different "Styles." You can change these in the Format Pane > Slicer Settings > Style.

  • Vertical List: The classic checkbox list. Best for small categories (e.g., "Gender" or "Status").
  • Tile (Button): Turns the list into clickable buttons. These are excellent for "Touch" interfaces and look much cleaner at the top of a report.
  • Dropdown: Saves massive amounts of canvas space. Users must click the arrow to see the options.
  • Between / Slider: Automatically used for Numbers and Dates. It provides a "From/To" slider.


2. Date Slicers: The Timeline

Date Slicers are unique because they offer specific "Relative" logic:

  • Relative Date: Allows users to select "Last 30 days," "This Year," or "Next 2 Weeks."
  • Relative Time: (If your data has timestamps) Allows filtering for the "Last 1 hour."
  • Before/After: A single-ended slider to see everything up to a certain point.


3. The "Sync Slicers" Pane

This is a critical "Professional" feature. If you have a multi-page report, you don't want your user to select "Region: North" on Page 1, only to have it reset to "All" when they click Page 2.

How to Sync:

  1. Go to the View tab in the top ribbon.
  2. Check the Sync Slicers box to open the pane.
  3. Select your Slicer. You will see a list of all your report pages.
  4. Check the Sync column (to keep filters the same) and the Eye column (to choose if the slicer is visible on that page).


4. Edit Interactions (Controlling the Slicer)

By default, a Slicer filters every visual on the page. However, sometimes you want a visual to remain unchanged (e.g., a "Global Total" card that should always show the company's total sales regardless of the "Region" slicer).


How to stop a Slicer from affecting a Visual:

  1. Select the Slicer.
  2. Go to the Format tab on the top ribbon.
  3. Click Edit Interactions.
  4. Look at your other visuals. You will see two small icons appear in their top corners: a "Filter" icon and a "None" (Circle with a line) icon.
  5. Click the None icon on any chart you want to "freeze."


5. Selection Settings

You can control how the user interacts with the Slicer in the Format Pane:

  • Single Select: Forces the user to pick exactly one option (turns checkboxes into radio buttons).
  • Multi-select with CTRL: Requires holding the Ctrl key to pick multiple items. (Turn this OFF for a better user experience).
  • Select All: Adds a "Select All" option to the top of the list.
